Drag Dress Up Box, Thinking Through the Body, group project
Site: The Street, Central Saint Martins
The Drag Dress Up Box was a collaborative feminist art piece responding to Dr Vikki Chalklin's seminar series "Thinking Through the Body". The theme of the project was inspired by queer theory, non-binary gender and Ru Paul's Drag Race. Members of the group, all studying BA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, produced a participatory installation which featured elements of performance from members of the group, video, audio, paintings, drawings, costumes and props. The piece has also been called a "happening", "event", "party" and "workshop". The Box was a judgment-free, intimately enclosed space for all identities to play with the deconstruction of identity. The audience were encouraged by performers to put on costumes, wigs and make-up, and use the props available so as to create their own alter-egos. The presentation of the Box installation concluded a 2-week long project in which members of the group bonded, exchanged skills and knowledge, and developed physical materials to be used in the installation.
